Welcome to This Week in Horror, a roundup of the gothic true crime stories shaping the world. This edition covers a fortnight: October 3 – 17, 2026. Six cases, six countries. Some of what follows is difficult to read, particularly the Bend report, which involves children. We have tried to tell it with care.

In the early hours of Saturday, October 3, 2026, a 39-year-old woman named Anna Yagi was killed in a hotel room in Naha, the capital of Okinawa. Police believe she died between 2:10 and 4:17 a.m. in the city's Wakasa district. Her wallet and backpack were gone. Within about a day, Japanese police had a suspect: Lance Cpl. Devin Jacob Ballard, a 20-year-old U.S. Marine stationed at Futenma Air Station. Ballard has denied killing and robbing her, and prosecutors have not yet announced formal charges.

Investigators have pieced the night together largely from cameras. Security footage obtained by Stars and Stripes appears to show a man matching Ballard drinking beer near a sausage shop and then following a woman who appears to be Yagi along Gate 2 Street, near Kadena Air Base, shortly before 11 p.m. on Friday, October 2. NHK, citing unnamed investigators, reported that the two then traveled about 11 miles by taxi from Okinawa City to Naha and walked to the hotel. Footage near the hotel reportedly shows a man entering with a woman and later leaving alone with her belongings. A patrolling officer spotted a man matching that description, with a shaved head and tattooed arms, in an Okinawa City entertainment district about 15 miles away and asked him to come to a station. Police suspect he strangled Yagi. NHK reported a cord was found around her neck, though police have not confirmed it.

Within days, one killing became a diplomatic crisis. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi called it a “heinous crime” and Japan lodged a strong protest with Washington. Okinawa's governor, Genta Koja, only weeks into his term, said he was “infuriated” and handed a protest letter to the Marine commander on October 5. On October 8, the commander imposed a midnight-to-5 a.m. curfew on every U.S. service member on the island as part of a 30-day “Period of Reflection” running to noon on November 8. On October 13, Takaichi told lawmakers the curfew was “insufficient.” Okinawa's prefectural assembly demanded an apology, compensation, and a revision of the Status of Forces Agreement, the treaty that governs how U.S. personnel are treated under Japanese law.

The anger lands on very old ground. Okinawa was under U.S. occupation until 1972 and still hosts roughly 70 percent of U.S. military facilities in Japan. Prefectural police recorded 101 criminal cases involving U.S. military personnel last year, up from about 40 in 2020. Last year a Marine was sentenced to seven years for choking and attempting to rape a woman in her twenties, and in 2017 a former Marine and civilian base worker received a life sentence for the rape and murder of a local woman. Yagi's family, speaking through their attorney, said they are “barely making it through each day” and want whoever took her life to face consequences “equal to the gravity of the act.” If convicted, Ballard could face life in prison or the death penalty.

💀 The hotel footage is brutally simple: a man and a woman walk in together. Only one of them walks out.

At 12:59 p.m. on Thursday, October 15, 2026, a driver on a quiet road in Bend, Oregon, called 911 to say someone had just fired at his pickup truck. Police say that driver, and a second motorist, had watched a 16-year-old with a gun approach Silver Rail Elementary School, throw the weapon over a fence, and climb in after it. The boy was a former Silver Rail student, not enrolled in the district at the time. The first driver confronted him from the roadside; the teenager fired at the truck at least three times. Then he went to the school's locked front doors, shot out the glass, and walked in.

Inside, he entered the first classroom on his left and fired as many as 15 rounds. A teacher threw her cell phone at him, then tackled him and fought for the shotgun, a Maverick 88 pump-action 12-gauge, with 44 rounds found on or near him. The second motorist, a father of two Silver Rail students, had followed the boy across the parking lot, retrieved his own legally secured .40-caliber pistol, and gone in after him. He shot and killed the teenager inside the classroom. Police arrived less than five minutes after the first call and found it already over.

Four people died besides the shooter: kindergartener Rhoam Summer, 5; teacher Megan Lambert, 25; and two boys, ages 8 and 11, whose names were withheld at their families' request. A 7-year-old child was in serious but stable condition at OHSU in Portland, and special education teacher Becky Drury, 54, was expected to survive. Lambert, a 2019 Mountain View High School graduate and 2023 Boise State graduate, had worked as a substitute at Silver Rail before landing her first full-time teaching job; her family said teaching in the district she loved was her dream. Rhoam's grandfather remembered a bright, playful boy who loved his scooter and reading books together.

Police have not established a motive. NBC News, citing sources, reported the gun had been bought by the shooter's mother, a detail investigators are expected to examine. Police Chief Mike Krantz said the teacher “almost certainly helped prevent more bloodshed” and credited the bystanders with preventing a worse outcome. Every Bend-La Pine school closed the next day. As with every case of this kind on This Week in Horror, we are not naming the shooter.

💀 From the first 911 call to police arriving took less than five minutes. Everything that mattered happened before they got there.

At about 1:40 p.m. on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, a 59-year-old man started stabbing people inside a commercial complex in Guwol-dong, Incheon, west of Seoul. The Korea Times reports he had knives fastened to both hands. A witness, 31-year-old Na Hyun-jun, said the man showed no words and no emotion as he attacked. Police say he targeted ten people and injured eight. A 19-year-old woman went into cardiac arrest; surgeons restarted her heart, but as of Wednesday she remained unconscious and on a ventilator.

What stopped him was ordinary people and furniture. A store owner blocked the attacker with a chair, and shoppers and staff joined in, throwing chairs and whatever else was within reach. A man named Shin hurled a chair at the back of the attacker's head as he came up the escalator. Others steered him away from the fourth-floor cinema, where many children were, and toward a third-floor parking entrance, where Na and two other men pinned him until police arrived. Police are considering commendations for five of them.

The suspect, identified by police as Choi Chung-rak, was already in the system. He was convicted in 2019 of attempting to murder his former wife, served four years, and was still wearing an electronic ankle monitor, ordered to remain on until February 2029, when he walked into the mall. Since August, police say, he had staged solo protests outside a hospital that had treated him for athlete's foot, sometimes carrying a weapon. Police had questioned him in September on suspicion of carrying a weapon in public.

In his own words to police, he wanted to “attract attention and make my grievances known to society,” and chose “people who looked weaker than me” without intending to kill them. Reports differ on drugs: one outlet said he was carrying a large quantity and told police he had taken some before the attack, while another said the medication appeared to be prescription and a rapid drug test was negative. Police sought a warrant for attempted murder and carrying a weapon in public, and reports on October 16 said he was detained. President Lee Jae Myung ordered a review of how ankle-monitor wearers are supervised, and the Justice Ministry apologized.

💀 A man the state was already tracking by ankle monitor, with a murder-attempt conviction and weeks of public warning signs, still walked into a shopping mall with knives on his hands.

On Monday, October 12, 2026, a 14-year-old boy walked into the Collège Joseph-Lakanal in Aubagne, near Marseille, carrying a hunting gun in a guitar case inside a bag. At least four shots were fired, including inside a classroom, leaving a mark on a blackboard. The headmaster, 53, was hit by pellets in the thighs and lower back. A 37-year-old teacher was struck in the thigh, and a third person was grazed. Authorities said neither staff member was in critical condition.

The shooting ended when a member of staff disarmed the boy after he shot the second teacher. A pupil told reporters a fire alarm sounded during her Spanish lesson, and that the gunman told pupils he had only come for the teachers. President Emmanuel Macron praised the staff's composure, saying it helped prevent the worst. Prefect Jacques Witkowski said the boy had no known history of delinquency or radicalization. The suspect's father was taken into custody and later released, and a separate procedure was opened to check whether the father's firearms were legally registered.

What happened next turned a school shooting into something larger. By Wednesday, France's national anti-terrorism prosecutor's office (PNAT) had taken over the case, citing premeditation and indiscriminate fire at school staff as signs of an attack meant to terrorize. A judicial investigation was opened for attempted murder linked to a terrorist enterprise, criminal terrorist conspiracy, and carrying weapons without legitimate reason. Prosecutors requested provisional detention for the boy.

The part that matters to anyone who follows true crime is the profile prosecutors describe. The PNAT says the teenager is probably linked to the so-called “True Crime Community,” an online network fascinated by murders and killers, including a sub-community devoted to mass shooters, which they say promotes attacks by imitation. Reportedly it is the first time French anti-terror justice has tied an attack to this profile. The boy admits the acts but says he did not intend to kill. He acknowledges being influenced by the community but denies claiming the attack in its name, and cites revenge over alleged harassment by teachers and classmates, which has not been corroborated. We are not naming the minor. And we say this plainly: fascination with crime is not the same as the glorification of killers, and the second is exactly what this case is about.

💀 Four shots, one chalk-dusted blackboard, and a guitar case that held something other than a guitar.

A 93-year-old widow surnamed Kwan lived alone in a 150-square-foot public rental flat in Tak Long Estate, Kai Tak, Hong Kong. She had no children. Years earlier she had recovered from colorectal cancer; more than two years ago a stroke left her bedridden with severe speech and mobility impairments. Her primary carer, arranged by a relative, was a 52-year-old Indonesian domestic helper who started work in January 2023. Social welfare officers checked in periodically and family visited about once a month.

On the morning of Sunday, October 11, 2026, according to The Standard's reporting of police findings, a home surveillance camera recorded an assault in the bedroom between 8:03 and 8:09 a.m. Police say the helper struck Kwan more than 20 times on the head, face and neck and stomped on her abdomen several times. At 8:10 Kwan became unresponsive, and at 8:20 the helper called Kwan's niece. Estate security called an ambulance and Kwan was pronounced dead at United Christian Hospital at 9:12 a.m. Police initially found no ransacking, no obvious struggle, and treated the death as having no apparent foul play.

The camera changed that. Relatives later reviewed the archived footage and alerted police, who raided the flat at 3:50 a.m. on Monday, October 12 and arrested the helper. On Wednesday, October 14, she was charged with murder at Kwun Tong Court and remanded in custody. (The Standard's timeline refers to the relatives' review as a Friday evening; since the incident was Sunday, we are not relying on that day.) Preliminary forensic findings included chest contusions, bruising on the abdomen and jaw, and an abrasion on the neck. A full autopsy and toxicology screening were planned, and the cause of death had not been confirmed in the reporting we reviewed. Everything here is an allegation; the woman has not been convicted.

Police have suggested that prolonged caregiving strain may have led to an emotional breakdown, and SCMP reported that preliminary investigations found friction had built up because the helper was overworked, with minor assaults intermittently each day over the preceding fortnight. That is a police explanation, not a confirmed motive, and it excuses nothing. But it has pushed Hong Kong, an aging city that relies heavily on live-in helpers, into a hard conversation about who watches over the isolated elderly, and who supports the people looking after them.

💀 Police first saw nothing suspicious: no ransacking, no struggle. It was a camera in the bedroom that told a different story.

At around 7 p.m. on Sunday, October 11, 2026, a 59-year-old woman surnamed Lin was stabbed to death in the kitchen of her home on Yongan Street in Xinzhuang District, New Taipei City. Her husband found her body when he came home from work. She had more than ten stab wounds to the neck and abdomen. Police say the suspect is her 33-year-old nephew, surnamed Lee, who had recently moved in with the couple.

According to police, the trigger was almost nothing. Lin bumped into Lee with her shoulder, and he took it as deliberate and insulting. Enraged, he reportedly went out, bought a knife, returned to the home, and attacked her. That detail, that the knife was purchased after the confrontation, is what makes this a case of sudden, escalating rage rather than a planned attack, though investigators will decide what they can prove.

Behind the shove sat a household under strain. Lee was unemployed. The couple had occasionally quarreled with him over his daily habits. He often asked for money to buy alcohol and tobacco, and Lin had been considering asking him to move out. They had argued earlier that same day.

Police say Lee then moved across the city. Using surveillance footage, officers tracked him as he reportedly ate at a hot pot restaurant, then rode the MRT and trains, switching transport several times in what police called an apparent attempt to evade surveillance. He was arrested around noon on Monday, October 12 in Taoyuan City, near Zhongshan Road. (Reporting says he left the home around 2 p.m. and the stabbing occurred around 7 p.m.; we have not been able to reconcile the two times, so we report both as police gave them.) The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty, and the motive described is police's account.

💀 A household's quiet friction, a shoulder bump, and a trail of surveillance footage that ended in Taoyuan.

THE MOST DISTURBING: AUBAGNE, FRANCE

Aubagne is this fortnight's most disturbing case, and not for the shooting alone. Two staff members survived, and the teachers who disarmed the boy likely saved lives. What disturbs is the reported origin: anti-terror prosecutors say a 14-year-old was probably tied to an online network that treats killers as figures to imitate. The boy had no known history of delinquency. It raises an uncomfortable question for everyone who loves this genre: where does fascination end and glorification begin? We believe the line is clear: we study crime to understand it, to honor victims, and to see warning signs, never to make anyone famous. Every case in this fortnight's report is told with that line in mind.

CLOSING

Six cases, six countries, one fortnight. In Okinawa, a killing reopened an old wound. In Bend, a teacher and a father ran toward danger. In Incheon, ordinary shoppers did what a monitoring system could not. In Aubagne, teachers disarmed a boy raised on a dark corner of the internet. In Kai Tak, a bedroom camera told what no one had seen. In Xinzhuang, a household's friction ended in a kitchen. Everyone named here is either a victim or a person presumed innocent until a court says otherwise. We tell these stories to remember them, and to look closer at the warnings that were there. See you in two weeks.
