This week, Asia dominated the
headlines in the worst possible way. A school that has produced prime ministers
and diplomats became a crime scene. A birthday party in Hong Kong ended with
sixteen people arrested and one man dead. A Taiwan grandfather used a sashimi
knife on the woman his son had married. A newborn twin was found in a toilet
bowl with stab wounds. And in Athens, a woman from Edinburgh went to meet her
“American friends” — and was found weeks later, folded inside a suitcase in an
abandoned building. Five countries. Five stories. Not a single one that makes
sense.
🩸 #1 — HE KILLED HIS

Debsirin Nonthaburi School is not just
any school. Founded in 1885, it is one of Thailand’s most distinguished
secondary institutions — the kind of place whose alumni wall is filled with
diplomats, athletes, and prime ministers. On the morning of Friday, August 7,
2026, it became the site of Thailand’s worst mass killing since 2022.
At around 10 in the morning, a
14-year-old student arrived at the school in Bang Kruai district, Nonthaburi
province, northwest of Bangkok. He was carrying his grandfather’s handgun.
Before reaching the school, investigators say he had already used it — shooting
both his grandparents dead at their home in the Bang Bua Thong district. The
motive for killing them first has not been established. The motive for what
came next is still under investigation, though reports indicate he had been
under severe stress related to school.
At the school, he fired at least 26
bullets. Five teachers and staff members were killed. Students — most of them
aged between 12 and 17 — ran for their lives. An 18-year-old student told
Reuters he initially thought he was hearing firecrackers. “I didn’t think it
was a gun at first,” he said. “There were many shots: Bang bang bang. Then it
went quiet. Then it started again.”
The shooter then turned the gun on
himself. He was rushed to hospital in serious condition and died there. In
total, seven people were killed and fifteen injured. The school has around
3,100 students and 147 teachers.
Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin
Charnvirakul visited the scene. “This is horrible, it shouldn’t have happened,”
he said. What he did not say — what Thai officials have struggled to say aloud
— is that this is becoming a pattern. A gunman killed five people at Bangkok’s
Or Tor Kor market in 2025. A teacher died in Hat Yai in February 2026 when a
shooter opened fire at her school. In 2023, a 14-year-old killed two people and
wounded five others at a luxury Bangkok shopping centre. In 2020, a soldier
killed 29 in Nakhon Ratchasima. And in 2022, a dismissed policeman killed 38
people, including 22 children stabbed in their sleep at a daycare centre in
Nong Bua Lamphu — the benchmark of horror that every new attack is measured
against.
Thailand has one of the highest rates of
private gun ownership in Southeast Asia. The grandfather’s handgun was legally
registered. It was kept at home. His fourteen-year-old grandson knew where it
was.
💀 THE DETAIL THAT WILL HAUNT
YOU: An emergency worker who reached the shooter described what they found —
the 14-year-old had shot himself in the right side of the head and collapsed.
They checked his pulse. When they got up, they found 34 unused ammunition
rounds still in his possession. He had come prepared to fire far more than he
did.

Isaac Yeung, 32, was a marketing
consultant. On the night of July 26, he was at Club Revel — an upstairs bar in
Cambridge House on Cameron Road, Tsim Sha Tsui — celebrating a friend’s
birthday. At a nearby table, a group of men with triad connections were
drinking. Something about Yeung’s manner, sources say, caused
“dissatisfaction.” Words were exchanged. Alcohol was involved.
What happened next lasted approximately
thirty seconds. Yeung was attacked — beaten with bare hands, according to
initial reports — and left unconscious on the floor with severe head trauma
including skull fractures and internal bleeding of the brain. His left ribs
were also fractured. He underwent two emergency brain surgeries and was placed
in the intensive care unit of Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where he remained in a
critical condition, never regaining consciousness. On July 31, five days after
the attack, he was pronounced dead. The case was immediately reclassified as
murder.
What followed was one of the most
sweeping triad arrests in Hong Kong in recent memory. Police launched an
anti-triad operation across Tsim Sha Tsui and Yuen Long. By August 7, sixteen
people had been arrested — nine men and three women initially, then four more
men including a Wo Shing Wo triad leader known as “Cho Hau” or “Left Mouth,” who
turned himself in. Four vehicles used to help the attackers flee were seized. A
52-year-old man was charged with assisting an offender specifically for
arranging getaway vehicles.
Among those charged with murder: Lai
Wing-lam, 29; Lee Man-tai, 33; Yung Wai-kin, 31; and Jacky Masanthiah, 26 — a
Thai national. The range of suspects — from a senior triad figure to a
24-year-old woman to a foreign national — suggests a network that was deeply
embedded in the bar that night, not a random brawl.
Isaac Yeung attended a birthday party. He
was beaten for half a minute. Sixteen people are now charged or suspected of
involvement. The machinery behind a thirty-second assault — the network, the
signal, the getaway vehicles, the cover — is a glimpse at how organized crime
operates in plain sight in one of the world’s most surveilled cities.
💀 THE DETAIL THAT WILL HAUNT
YOU: Police said Yeung’s behavior caused “dissatisfaction” among the
neighbouring table. That is the entire documented trigger — a social irritant,
at a birthday party, in a crowded bar. Whatever Yeung did or said in those
moments, it was enough for a triad network to mobilize, attack, arrange a
getaway, and ultimately kill a man. Sixteen people knew what was going to
happen. He did not.

On the evening of July 26, a 34-year-old
woman arrived at the apartment building in Zhonghe District, New Taipei City,
where her in-laws lived. She had come, as she sometimes did, to collect her
four-year-old daughter. According to relatives, her father-in-law had issued an
unusual invitation — he had asked her to come for dinner. In hindsight, this
detail would disturb investigators most. He had planned for her to be there.
In the ground-floor stairwell, a
confrontation began. The 66-year-old father-in-law produced a sashimi knife — a
blade typically used in Japanese cuisine, long and thin and designed for
precise cutting — and attacked her. He slashed her head and neck approximately
30 to 40 times. The assault was captured on the building’s surveillance
cameras. She was found at the scene. The injuries to her neck were described by
local media as nearly severing it.
He was arrested. What emerged from the
investigation was a portrait of years of undocumented abuse. Relatives of the
victim alleged that the father-in-law had sexually harassed her for years, had
verbally abused her repeatedly, and had developed a habit of ambushing her at
her workplace to demand money. The victim’s husband, by accounts, had not
supported her against his own father. Left largely alone, she had taken on two
jobs to support herself and their daughter. She had moved to her own family’s
home to escape, leaving her daughter in the care of her parents when her
in-laws were unavailable. She had reportedly begun discussing divorce with her
husband.
In the weeks before her death, sources
say she had filed a complaint about her father-in-law’s behaviour. It went
unresolved. On the night of July 26, believing she was attending a family
dinner, she followed him into a stairwell.
💀 THE DETAIL THAT WILL HAUNT
YOU: The surveillance footage shows her arriving on her electric scooter —
white T-shirt, dark trousers, white helmet. She takes off the helmet. She
follows him inside. Whatever she expected from a dinner invitation in a stairwell,
it was not the knife. The footage shows the moment she realizes. And then it
ends.

On July 29, a lecturer at a college in
Kluang, Johor, went to conduct a welfare check on a female student who had been
reported unwell. Inside the student’s rented house in Taman Setia Mutiara, the
lecturer made a discovery that would open a murder investigation: the body of a
newborn baby girl, inside a toilet bowl, with multiple stab wounds to the
chest. A 24-centimetre knife and bloodstained clothing were seized from the
premises.
The 19-year-old student was taken to
Enche Besar Hajjah Khalsom Hospital. There, doctors discovered she had just
given birth — and that a second baby, a twin, was still in her womb. The
surviving twin was delivered safely at the hospital.
Police arrested both the student and her
19-year-old boyfriend, also a college student. According to investigators, the
two had been in a secret relationship for several months — an extramarital
affair complicated by the fact that neither was married but both were enrolled
in college in a deeply conservative social environment. When the pregnancy
became known between them, the boyfriend paid his girlfriend RM450 —
approximately SGD 130 — to terminate the babies. The abortion attempt failed or
was abandoned. The twins went to term.
A post-mortem confirmed the cause of
death: multiple stab wounds to the chest. The surviving twin is in the care of
authorities.
The 19-year-old female student is now
being charged with murder. As of this week, her remand has been extended to
facilitate the ongoing investigation under Sections 302 and 315 of the Penal
Code — murder, and acts intended to prevent a child from being born alive or to
cause its death after birth. The boyfriend faces investigation for his alleged
role in the chain of events.
💀 THE DETAIL THAT WILL HAUNT
YOU: The surviving twin was delivered at the same hospital where her mother was
admitted as a suspect. She was born the same day her sister’s body was found in
a toilet bowl forty minutes away. One twin died with stab wounds to the chest.
The other is alive. They were born on the same day, in the same womb, to the
same mother — and their lives could not be more different.

Elisabeth-Jane Ross was 38 years old,
from Edinburgh, Scotland. In late June 2026, she travelled to Greece — a trip,
by all accounts, that was meant to be a holiday. She was staying with friends
in Piraeus, the port city adjacent to Athens. In mid-July, she told those
friends she was heading to Kypseli — a dense, central neighbourhood of Athens —
to meet some “American friends.” She gave no further details. She did not
return.
On July 18, a homeless man discovered a
body inside a suitcase at an abandoned building in Kypseli. The body was in an
advanced state of decomposition. Despite the difficult environmental
conditions, forensic specialists from the Hellenic Police’s Directorate of
Criminal Investigations were able to recover usable fingerprints. Through those
fingerprints, the woman was identified as Elisabeth-Jane Ross.
The investigation that followed involved
the Hellenic Police’s Department of Crimes against Life and Personal Freedom,
the UK’s National Crime Agency, and the Police Service of Scotland. Digital
analysis of video footage, physical evidence from the scene, and banking
records combined to identify a suspect. In the days after Ross’s death, someone
had been using her bank cards to withdraw cash at ATMs across Athens.
On July 30, a 26-year-old Afghan man was
brought to police headquarters for questioning. He confessed. He admitted to
transporting the body in the suitcase to the abandoned building. A search of
his home revealed a replica pistol, a knife, and other items that led to
additional charges of weapons violations. He has been charged with homicide,
robbery, and weapons offences. He is being held in custody.
What happened in that abandoned building
— or wherever Elisabeth-Jane Ross actually died — remains under investigation.
The “American friends” have not been publicly identified. Whether they ever
existed is unknown.
💀 THE DETAIL THAT WILL HAUNT
YOU: She told her friends in Piraeus she was going to Kypseli to meet some
American friends. That is the last thing anyone who knew her heard her say. Her
body was found three weeks later in a suitcase in an abandoned building in
Kypseli — exactly where she said she was going. She arrived. Whatever she found
when she got there was not what she expected.
💀 MOST DISTURBING THIS WEEK
This week belongs to Taiwan — not because
the sashimi knife attack is the most lethal story on this list, but because of
what it represents. A 34-year-old woman had filed complaints. She had moved
out. She had taken two jobs. She had started talking about divorce. She had
done, in other words, everything that the system asks women in dangerous
situations to do. None of it protected her from a dinner invitation in a
stairwell and a knife she never saw coming. The surveillance footage exists.
The weapon was recovered. The perpetrator was arrested at the scene. And yet,
for years before July 26, every mechanism available to her had failed. The
camera only started recording when it was already too late.
