Five places where the doors, in one way or another, were locked.

It was almost midnight on Sunday, July 12, at Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao — a popular music bar in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district, walking distance from the weekend market that draws tourists by the thousand. A live band was on stage. The room was full.

Then the musicians noticed smoke coming from the electrical circuit on the wall behind them. The lights went out. There was an explosion. And in the darkness, a room full of people tried to find a way out of a building that had been quietly designed to trap them.

Firefighters took half an hour to bring the blaze under control. By Tuesday, the death toll had climbed to 30, with more than 70 injured — 24 of them critical. It is Thailand’s deadliest fire since the Santika nightclub disaster killed 67 people on New Year’s Day 2009.

And here is the detail that turns tragedy into scandal: the venue was licensed as a restaurant with live music — not an entertainment venue — because it sat outside the designated zoning for nightlife. That classification exempted it from the stricter fire-safety requirements that entertainment venues must meet. It had passed a safety inspection in April.

Three days before Bangkok burned, China had already had its fire.

At around noon on Thursday, July 9, flames broke out on the ground floor of the Huiteng shoe factory in Jinjiang, Fujian province — the coastal city known as China’s “shoe capital,” where thousands of factories produce roughly a fifth of the world’s athletic shoes, more than a billion pairs a year.

There were 239 people inside the five-storey building: 237 workers and two visitors. Shoe manufacturing is a chemistry of glues, solvents, synthetic fabrics and rubber — some of the most flammable materials in any industry — and the fire moved through them with terrible speed. State media footage showed the entire building engulfed, thick black smoke pouring into the sky, and a dozen or so people trapped on the rooftop, visible through the smoke, while the spray from fire hoses fell short of the flames climbing toward them.

Authorities pulled 213 people out. Two of them died in hospital. Another 26, initially reported missing, were later confirmed dead inside. Twenty-eight people, killed at work, on an ordinary Thursday.

The response was swift in the way only China’s can be: President Xi Jinping publicly demanded that those responsible be “strictly held accountable,” and within a day the factory’s owner and managers were arrested and the company’s accounts frozen. But the pattern is the scandal. Official data records 18,261 people killed in workplace accidents across China in 2025 alone — and Beijing had launched a nationwide fire-hazard crackdown just last November, after a residential blaze in Hong Kong killed 168 people. The inspections came. The fires kept coming anyway.

At 3:55 in the morning on January 30, at Kashiwa Tanaka Hospital in Chiba Prefecture, someone introduced human faeces into the intravenous drip of Eiji Aida — a 75-year-old inpatient from neighbouring Ibaraki. He never knew. The bacteria entered his bloodstream while he slept.

His condition collapsed. He died the following night of multiple organ failure caused by sepsis. When staff examined his IV line, they found a brown foreign object inside the tube. But the details already public are chilling enough: she quietly resigned from the hospital at the end of February, weeks after the death — and when police arrested her this Wednesday, she was working as a midwife at a hospital in Tokyo. Japan has been here before. In 2016, a Yokohama nurse named Ayumi Kuboki was arrested for poisoning patients’ IV drips with disinfectant — and told police she may have killed as many as 20 people. On Wednesday, July 8, a Berlin court sentenced a 41-year-old palliative care doctor — identified only as Johannes M. under Germany’s privacy laws — to life in prison for the murder of 15 of his own patients. It may be the smallest number in this story.

Between September 2021 and July 2024, Johannes M. worked for an end-of-life care service in Berlin, making home visits to the seriously ill. Prosecutors proved that on at least 15 of those visits — 12 women and three men, aged 25 to 94 — he injected his patients, without their knowledge or consent, with an anaesthetic followed by a muscle relaxant. The second drug paralysed their breathing. Death came within minutes, in their own beds, at the hands of the man sent to ease their suffering. It was the fires that finally undid him: a co-worker grew suspicious that so many of his patients seemed to die in burning apartments. On one day in July 2024, he killed two patients in a single afternoon — a 75-year-old man in Kreuzberg, then a 76-year-old woman in a nearby neighbourhood, hours apart.

Prosecutors said he had no motive at all beyond the killing itself — that his acts met the German legal definition of Mordlust: lust for murder. He had written his doctoral thesis on homicide. Its opening words were: “Why do people kill?”

For most of the year-long trial he stayed silent. Then, near the end, he confessed. “I despair at myself,” he told the court, claiming he had convinced himself he was sparing his patients suffering: “Throughout it all, I thought it was the best thing for everyone.”

The presiding judge said the 15 convictions “may well be only a glimpse” of his crimes. A special task force has reviewed 395 deaths connected to his career. In February 2025, she travelled to the Sabia Wellness House in Miami Beach for a three-day retreat built around something called the “Heart Protocol”: a ceremony promising relief from depression, anxiety, addiction and past trauma, and a connection with her “higher self.” She paid a $2,000 participation fee and signed a waiver. She was instructed to complete a gastrointestinal “parasite cleanse” beforehand — she was told a clean gut would mean “a potentially deeper ceremony.”

The man running the ceremony was Dr. Samuel Lee, 44 — a genuine, board-certified psychiatrist who marketed himself as a “holistic, integrative psychiatrist who uses a Spiritual approach towards mental health.” According to the arrest warrant, the protocol involved GABA supplements to “relax the brain,” three doses of “heart medicine” — MDMA — to “open the heart,” and an intramuscular injection of ketamine timed for when the MDMA was peaking. Court records say DMT, a powerful psychedelic, was in the mix as well.

Sodhi was found unresponsive in a rooftop sauna at the wellness house. Lee was performing CPR when officers arrived. She was pronounced dead at the scene. It took nearly a year and a half. But this week, Lee was arrested and arraigned on a second-degree felony manslaughter charge. He has pleaded not guilty. His Texas medical license has been temporarily suspended, with the board calling his practice of medicine “a threat to public welfare.”
